We supply bare-root stock of some varieties of hedging between November and March including Beech, Hornbeam, Hazel, Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Dogwood, Dog Rose, Field Maple, Box and Privet. Bare-root plants are dug directly from the field and will require to be planted with greater soil preperation and care in the first year while they are establishing. Their advantage is that they are the cheap option but obviously take longer than container grown plants to establish. With care in the first year they will give you an excellent hedge.

Bare-Root Beech Hedging 3-4ft high
Bare-Root Beech Hedging 3-4ft high
Beech grows on most soils but does not like wet clay soils. It clips well and makes a solid hedge and is tolerant of light sandy soils and chalky soils. Hornbeam is more suited to heavy clay soils. Beech is similar to hornbeam in that the dead leaves hang on the hedge for most of the winter. Planting should be in a staggered double row at 60cms apart with 45cms between the two rows.
