Our Festive Guide to 'Hedge the Halls' this Christmas: Day 2

We’re onto Day 2 of our ‘Hedge the Halls’ countdown to Christmas. The sound of sleigh bells is fast approaching, and Christmas is just around the corner – so the time has come to get decorating! Read on to discover how to transform a simple hedge with some seriously cool festive touches.

Fun Fact: “Deck the Hedges” - A Medieval Tradition

We all know that hedges are great for keeping your garden safe and secure, offering privacy, and acting as a home to birds and wildlife – but did you know that they also have a festive purpose throughout history? The medieval period brought with it the practice of “decking the hedges”, using hedges and foliage to act as greenery in Christmas decorations; a tradition which we recreate to this day with trailing garlands and decorations of holly!

Decorating Your Hedges This Christmas: Build a Hedge ‘Gnome’mans Land

So, just what can you use to transform a simple garden hedge into a wintery paradise? The answer may be somewhat unexpected: let's discover how to create Santa's Workshop Gnome Village!

Tidy the Hedge

Before you begin, make sure that your hedge is in good condition. Trim any old foliage and remove any dead branches to ensure that your decorations look their best.

Choose Your Gnomes

Gnomes are the perfect way to add a touch of festive fun to your garden! Choose some traditional, red-suited Santa's helpers, or go for some unique characters to really make your hedge come to life!

Prepare the Gnomes

Once you have chosen your gnomes, it's time to get them ready for their winter wonderland. Paint the gnomes in festive colours and add Christmas decorations such as trees, presents, and candy canes.

Hang your Gnomes

Now it's time to get creative! Hang the gnomes on the hedge using fishing wire or string, making sure to place them in eye-catching positions for maximum effect. You can also use decorations such as fairy lights to add a sparkly touch!

Create the Workshop

As well as adding a collection of gnomes, you can also take the theme one step further with a Santa's Workshop. Use miniature furniture and props to create the perfect setting for your festive gnomes and add gifts and presents to make the scene even more magical and really stretch your creativity.

Get Creative with Festive Foliage

Finally, transform your hedge from ordinary to extraordinary with the addition of some festive foliage! Drape Christmas garlands around the hedge or use holly leaves and berries to add a splash of Christmas colour; and don't forget to top it off with a sprig of mistletoe for luck! If you're feeling adventurous, why not take the decorations up a notch and add some snow to complete the scene?

A Festive Hedge for All to Enjoy

By following our simple steps, you can create your very own winter wonderland hedge this Christmas. Not only will it look amazing, but it's also the perfect way to bring cheer and joy to your garden for all your family and friends to enjoy!
