Description
These root balled box hedging plants are an effective way to plant a Box hedge that can be shaped up to form an instant border around existing beds or to create a pleasant demarcation between area of the garden. These plants have been properly root balled in the field meaning that their roots are well contained in plenty of soil with hessian wrapped around them. Being root balled rather than container grown, these plants represent good value for money but should only be planted in the colder months of the year and watered properly in their first year after planting. These plants are all sold as 60-80cm in height.
Common Box (Buxus sempervirens) is an extremely popular hedging plant for creating small hedges and clips extremely well. If grown as individual plants they are highly popular plants to use for topiary (see our topiary page).
These root balled Box hedging plants are evergreen and produce a mass of small green leaves and grows well in many situations. It produces a thick hedge suitable for garden borders and for demarcating separate parts of gardens. Box will often be found in many formal gardens as it clips well and retains its shape.
Box is slow growing and you should only expect around 15cm (6 inches) of growth a year. It will need clipping annually to encourage it to thicken out to make a dense hedge. Box clips extremely well and can be used to make very tight shapes.
The root balled Box hedging plants shown in the picture are shown at a spacing of 3 per metre but they could be planted slightly closer or further apart if needed. Planted at 3 per metre, these plants form a relatively instant hedge ready for clipping to shape.
Box hedging grows well in most soil types, including dry sites and in shade however we recommend that planting compost is used to give your Box hedge plants the best chance of establishing well in their first few years after planting.
