If you are looking to plant an 9ft leylandii hedge, then these plants are all already at that height or very close to it. They have been trimmed hard in the early spring to encourage thicker and bushier growth and so it won’t take long for these fast growing trees to form a neat and dense hedge. They will thicken out quickly during the warm growing season but will need to be kept well watered to allow them to grow at their full potential.
Planting a 9ft Leylandii hedge is a quick option to achieving that all important eye level-privacy and these plants will form a thick hedge quickly after planting. An 9ft leylandii hedge is often more the high enough for most gardens and these plants can be planted and trimmed down to a height of 6-7ft to give a much more instant looking hedge.
Leylandii are a fast growing evergreen and these plants will put on 2-3ft (60-90cm) each year if left untrimmed and so it will not take long for these plants to produce a Leylandii hedge at the required height to give eye level privacy.
Once the plants have reached their desired height, we recommend that it be trimmed at that height which will both encourage side growth and restrict upward growth to a manageable amount. A leylandii hedge needs to be trimmed annually in the spring or autumn.
Any leylandii hedge plants should be planted 2ft (60cm) apart (as shown in the picture) and if they are planted during the drier summer months, they must be properly watered in their first year to ensure that they establish properly. This is best done using leaky hose which is cheap, easy to install and very effective.
