The Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris) is a common hedgerow plant found in many of our rural hedges in the UK.  A distant relative of the commercial eating apple, crab apples produce small fruits that are incredibly sour unless they are slow cooked (preferably with a lot of sugar) for use in things such as preserves and jellies.  Did you know that they are also seen as a symbol of fertility and are commonly associated with marriage and love?

In the spring, crab apples produce an abundance of white blossom which is favoured by many pollinating insects.  The blossom will then develop into small fruits which are yellow-green in colour.  Crab apples produce glossy oval shaped leaves with small serrated edges.  They are an excellent addition to a native hedge providing pollen for insects, fruit for birds and shelter for just about everything.

These plants are all 80-100cm tall and come bare rooted, that is to say that they are dug straight from the field and are sold without any soil around their roots. These plants should be planted as soon as possible after purchasing to avoid the roots drying out and damage occurring to the hedge plants.

A pure Crab Apple hedge is uncommon and it is mostly found as part of a mixed species native hedge and will grow extremely well with other species such as Hawthorn, Field Maple, Spindle, Beech, Dog Rose, Hazel and Hornbeam. Native hedges such as this can be found across much of the UK and are a common sight in rural environments.

These bare root native hedging plants should be planted 45cm apart in a single row or 60cm apart in a double row.

As these are bare root plants, we recommend using Rootgrow which helps the plants produce a secondary system of roots. It is also important if deer and rabbits are prolific in your planting area to use spiral tree guards to protect them until they are more established.

More information on our other native hedging varieties can be found on the Native Hedging category page which will show you all of the commonly used native hedging varieties.
